In the bustling venue of the Filmhouse café in
the centre of Edinburgh, we displayed examples of the
work produced by participants in the darkrooms and digital
labs at Stills throughout Ricochet 2006.

Arpita Shah - Vasant Ritu (Birth of Spring)
As an Indian born artist, who has spent an early part
of my life in the Middle East before settling in Britain,
my work inevitably draws upon the experience of shifting
cultural identities.
Part of a series of portraits of Indian women who have
settled in Scotland, Vasant Ritu was inspired by Indian
miniatures, specifically from the Mughal and Ragamala
period paintings of ancient India. The series explores
the influence of Indian culture and Mythology on modern
British Asian identity. These portraits investigate
the mythological dimensions of her Hindu subjects, letting
them reflect and celebrate their varied histories and
appearances.

Lost Glory
In the developing countries we tend to think of the
Western world as everything to be looked up to. As
we devote ourselves to catching up with modernity
a lot of valuable historical and cultural aspects
are slowly being forgotten.
Angkor Wat is a spectacular example that reminds us
the importance of preserving our history and culture.
There was once a glorious civilisation in this land
which we and our future generations should be proud
of – it needs to be preserved before it is lost
forever.
