Ricochet 2006 trainees
Arpita Shah,
Rose
de Larrabeiti and
Wen Foo are emerging artists interested in working directly
with communities. Ricochet offered a specialised training
for Arpita, Rose and Wen in the delivery of education projects
through a series of tailored practical and theoretical tutorials.
They then put their new skills into practise by organising
a project of their own based around the themes of the Among
the Moderns exhibition called Home and Elsewhere.
Home and Elsewhere
‘We are all living in
a multicultural society where everyone is displaced these
days. This takes us to that most popular question of Home?
What is home?’
This project was inspired by one particular video from the
Among the Moderns exhibition, BerlinBeirut by Myrna Maakaron.
‘Berlin has 6 letters. Beirut has 6 letters too :
Berlin and Beirut were occupied, destructed, divided, reconstructed
and today people still say "East and West" in both
cities. Through the whole film Berlin and Beirut become one
city. One space. A space where you feel the weight of the
past and the lightness of life sharing with Myrna her stories,
adventures and memories.’
Arpita, Rose and Wen discussed with participants the emotional
reality of having two cities to call home, before going on
to further explore the subject using photography and digital
manipulation techniques.
As well as learning new skills in Photoshop and practical
photography, participants left with a beautiful spiral-bound
booklets containing an example of each participant’s
artwork.
