Federico Modica, EXPOSITO

Federico works predominantly as a photojournalist with a focus on sports and reportage photography. Taking inspiration from the world of fashion, Federico undertook research into the history of tartan whilst at Stills, and developed a number of contacts to carry out photo-shoots at Edinburgh castle and other iconic landmarks. He was proactive in making connections with Press photographers in Edinburgh, and towards the end of his residency accompanied a reporter from The Scotsman, with the resulting image of Alex Salmond being published in the paper. Federico benefited from the freedom of the residency, and took the opportunity to use analog film for the first time. He especially enjoyed working in the darkroom, experimenting with both large and medium-format cameras and it has greatly influenced his overall approach to his practice.

Federico Modica participated in EXPOSITO  in June 2010, a Stills collaboration with Arteteca to give three Italian photographers the opportunity to spend a period of time in Edinburgh for the research and development of their practice. As Stills first international residency, it enabled visits to national and regional collections, archives, local galleries as well as providing access to production facilities and integration into the Stills’ community.

Exposito is a project originally conceived by Arteteca, its primary purpose to promote the artistic production of the Campanian region of Southern Italy through a system of collaboration with international partners. It is an on-line archive that collects information and documentation of the artists who live in Naples, and a promotion and discussion platform that organizes talks, exhibitions, workshops, and artist residencies.
