MONDAY 4 JUNE 7PM

For our first joint meeting we will discuss Setting Sun - Writings by Japanese Photographers. Japanese photographers have created a tradition strikingly different from that of their Western counterparts. Their work is based on ideas, rules, and aesthetics that are specific to Japanese culture but often little known in the West. Many photographers throughout the history of the medium in Japan have produced substantial bodies of written work that form an essential counterpart to their visual art. Setting Sun is an anthology of key texts written from the 1950s to the present by leading Japanese photographers, including Eikoh Hosoe, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Daido Moriyama, Shomei Tomatsu, and Nobuyoshi Araki. Chosen titles are available at 10% off at Beyond Words

As you may know we’re in the process of upgrading our production facilities here at Stills. But we want to do more than simply give you better equipment so we’re transforming our Resource into a creative hub where you can meet friends for a chat and coffee, use our research library, attend artists talks and screening nights and much, much more.

We’re doing all of this with the help of Lottery funding from the Scottish Arts Council, The City of Edinburgh Council and The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation all topped off with really generous sponsorship form Habitat.
