SATURDAY 03 NOVEMBER – SUNDAY 20 JANUARY 2008 11AM – 6PM
PREVIEW: FRIDAY 02 NOVEMBER 7PM - 9PM
Ori Gersht explores landscapes embedded with both personal and historic resonance in his stunning film The Forest and photographic series The Clearing.
Israeli-born Gersht voyages through his family history exploring his prehistoric forest of the Carpathian Mountains where some of his relatives found harsh haven from Nazi persecution.
Encountering an evocative landscape shrouded in history and the horrors of the past, The Forest is powerful and moving, culminating in an act of destruction of breaking timbers and branches. The film’s strength contrasts with the mystical journey of The Clearing, enhanced by Gersht’s manipulation of colour, density and image.
The Forest was commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella in association with The Photographers’ Gallery, London, with support from Arts Council England. With additional thanks to CRG Gallery, New York, Angles Gallery, Los Angeles and Noga Gallery, Tel Aviv and Mummery + Schnelle www.mummeryschnelle.com
